Bill's Bio:
WOOD TV8 Chief Meteorologist Emeritus Bill Steffen has been a familiar and friendly face in West Michigan since November of 1974. His love of weather began at an early age. At 8 years old, Bill set up a weather station in his backyard and proceeded to phone in snow totals to the local TV station. His very first appearance on air was in 1967 to test the new cable TV in Winnetka, Ill. The ever-industrious Bill opted to wear his Boy Scout uniform because he lacked a proper suit and tie. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, the Chicago native joined WZZM as a meteorologist.
It was here he faced a once-in-a-lifetime event: the Blizzard of 1978. For two days, the storm raged, dumping close to 2 feet of snow in West Michigan. Bill helmed every forecast for 72 hours straight, getting very little sleep in between newscasts. For an entire viewing area crippled under a historic snowfall, Bill Steffen was a beacon in the dark. He became chief meteorologist there in 1985 and then joined 24 Hour News 8 in 2001. In July 2021, he transitioned to chief meteorologist emeritus, taking a new role while remaining a key part of Storm Team 8. Bill and his wife live in the Grand Rapids area. His family said Bill’s devotion to forecasting is unmatched only by his devotion to his family.
Bill has been honored with numerous broadcast awards and he’s very active in the West Michigan community. Generations of viewers have shared Bill’s excitement about the weather thanks to his thousands of classroom visits and volunteer work. He has worked with the regional Math Counts Competition and the Science Olympiad, and he’s an honorary chair of fundraising for the Grand Rapids Planetarium.
Bill has been the chairman of the Red Cross Heroes Campaign. He’s also on the marketing committee and board of directors for the Gerald R. Ford Boy Scout Council and the advisory board for Youth for Christ. He also writes Bill’s Blog on woodtv.com.
