Why is the island known as America's Emerald Isle?
Beaver Island is home to about 600 year-round residents and many of them have Irish immigrant ancestors that made it a bustling 19th-century fishing port. As the Irish immigrants wrote back to their families, the island was often referred to as America's Emerald Island.
Still to this day, the Irish heritage is frequently celebrated on the island.
