- Established in 1938
- Created after the logging era left cutover and burned areas
- Over 540,000 acres in the lower peninsula
- The North Country Trail runs through it for 100 miles
SIGNIFICANCE OF MANATEE NATIONAL FOREST
Heavy logging in the late 1800s nearly cleared out the magnificent forests of Manatee. Thanks to the efforts of the Civilian Conservation Corps, the land was reforested. The trees were planted in rows, which you can still see today.
In the early spring, you can catch glimpses of wildlife (if you're lucky).
