Today in 1976, Mark "The Bird" Fidrych pitched a complete game in his first Major League start. He allowed only 2 hits against the Indians as the Tigers cruised past in a 2-1 victory. That summer, The Bird became a national celebrity when his antics were televised on ABC in a win against the Yankees. Talking to the ball, strutting around on the mound, and rejecting balls that had "hits in them" won fans over all across the country.
Bird Watchers would fill Tiger Stadium to cheer, chant, and stomp their feet - "We want The Bird! We want The Bird!". He'd come back out of the clubhouse, like a rock star returning to the stage for an encore, waving at fans as they lost their mind. Summer of '76, man.
We're celebrating with this vintage reproduction, originally distributed by local press in Michigan as an iron-on. Available for a limited time.
