Hell was first settled in 1838 by George Reeves and his family. Farmers would come into town to grind their flour at his mill and would also, uh, overindulge in his whiskey. So it wasn't uncommon for wagons to return home without their drivers. When the State of Michigan asked George what to call his town in 1841, he said "Call it Hell for all I care, everyone else does."

Today in 1979, Earvin "Magic" Johnson led MSU to its first NCAA national championship against Larry Bird and Indiana State. The game marked the beginning of the famous Magic vs Bird rivalry and remains the highest rated game in the history of televised college basketball. Michigan State won 75-64.

Today in 1936, the Detroit Red Wings won the longest Stanley Cup game in history. Against the Montreal Maroons, they played 60 minutes of regulation followed by 116 minutes of overtime on their way to their first championship.

Congratulations to the Western Michigan Broncos for winning their first CCHA championship since 1986! They beat Michigan 3-2 this past Saturday at Joe Louis Arena. The Broncos earned an automatic bid into the NCAA hockey tournament.

On this day in 1967, the number one overall draft pick was Bubba Smith out of MSU. Four of the top eight picks were from Michigan State that year. Bubba went to the Baltimore Colts and won Super Bowl V in 1970 with them.
