THE ARSENAL OF DEMOCRACY

April 24, 2012

THE ARSENAL OF DEMOCRACY

Today in 1941, the first Chrysler built M3 tank rolled off the assembly line. Detroit played a key production role during World War II, earning it the title of the "Arsenal of Democracy" for helping defeat the Axis powers. Car manufacturers reluctantly joined the war effort and eventually ceased all auto production in order produce enough weapons for the US Army. Michigan's manufacturing prowess made a large impact during those turbulent years.

MYSTERY MICHIGAN CRATERS FROM 1973

Today in 1973, hundreds of mysterious craters appeared in the town of Williamsburg, near Traverse City. The craters spewed  geysers of mud, gas, and water. Scientists theorized that a well might have caused the incident, which made the town look like the surface of the Moon.

DRINKING BEER MAKES YOU SMARTER

April 13, 2012

DRINKING BEER MAKES YOU SMARTER

A study performed at the University of Illinois suggests that drinking beer can enhance your problem solving skills.  They gave one group of men a single beer and a second group a few beers and then asked them to solve word puzzles and brain teasers.  The several beer crew did 40 percent better.

So remember this: drinking a few beers will make you 40 percent better than usual!  Except in the memory department.  The study showed beer is terrible for memory.  So on second thought, you better write it down instead.

Mmmmm, beer.  Nab a vintage soft Drink Local shirt before heading out for happy hour.

MIKE WALLACE 1918 - 2012

April 9, 2012

MIKE WALLACE 1918 - 2012

"I determined that if I was to carve out a piece of reportorial territory for myself it would be [doing] the hard interview, irreverent if necessary, the façade-piercing interview.” -Mike Wallace (May 9, 1918 - April 7, 2012)

Mike Wallace graduated from the University of Michigan and worked for radio stations in Grand Rapids and Detroit before ending up on 60 Minutes in 1968. His parents hoped he'd become a doctor or a lawyer, but was drawn to radio instead.

He interviewed iconic figures and world leaders, including Martin Luther King, Jr, John F. Kennedy, Yassir Arafit, Vladimir Putin, and Malcolm X.

"[I was] an overacheiver. I worked pretty hard. Played a hell of a fiddle."  Rest in peace, Mike.
