THE ARSENAL OF DEMOCRACY

Today in 1941, the first Chrysler built M3 tank rolled off the assembly line. Detroit played a key production role during World War II, earning it the title of the "Arsenal of Democracy" for helping defeat the Axis powers. Car manufacturers reluctantly joined the war effort and eventually ceased all auto production in order produce enough weapons for the US Army. Michigan's manufacturing prowess made a large impact during those turbulent years.
